Starburst Rock Cycle

Try out this edible rock cycle made out of starburst candy!

You will need:

  • Mini Starbursts
  • Plate
  • Bowl
  • Microwave

1. Pour mini starbursts onto plate. We used mini starbursts that were already unwrapped. If you have regular sized starbursts, unwrap them and cut them into smaller pieces. These small starbursts are the sediments.

2. Have kiddos form sedimentary rocks by pushing the starbursts (sediments) together.

3. Once they have formed a sedimentary rock, have them apply heat and pressure using their hands to turn their sedimentary rocks into metamorphic rocks.

4. Place the metamorphic rock into a bowl. You will melt this into magma by placing it in the microwave for 30 seconds.

CAUTION: Candy will be HOT after using a heat source. Please make sure all materials are cool to the touch before letting kiddos handle the candy rocks.

5. Once the magma cools, this will be the igneous rock.

6. Remind kiddos that the rock cycle goes on and on as rocks are broken back into sediments through weathering and erosion.

Enjoy this tasty science activity! What is your favorite flavor Starburst?
