Glitter Germ Hand Washing

Washing your hands has always been important but it’s even more important now with ALL THE GERMS.

This glitter germ hand washing activity shows kids just how important it is to wash your hands properly. Those “glitter germs” won’t come off unless if you wash your hands the RIGHT way.

You will need:

  • Glitter
  • Lotion
  • Hand Soap
  • Sink with Water

STEP 1

Make sure you have lotion, glitter, and hand soap. You may also want to have a step stool ready for hand washing if needed for your child to reach the sink. You can also watch some hand washing videos on YouTube prior to this activity to learn other fun hand washing songs!

STEP 2

Have your child rub lotion on their hands. After they have lotion on their hands, sprinkle glitter all over. Tell your child they will be washing glitter germs away! The glitter and lotion will represent all the germs that are stuck on our hands. Talk about the importance of washing our hands and discuss how hard it is to get germs off of their hands without proper hand washing. The glitter represents those stubborn germs that are so hard to get off!

STEP 3

Try to rinse some of the glitter germs away with only water. Ask your child if many glitter germs came off. The answer will be no, not many! Time to learn the proper CDC guidelines for handwashing.

CDC HAND WASHING GUIDELINES

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.

4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

A few glitter germs might even remain at the end, showing kids just how hard it is to get germs off even with proper hand washing!
