No Dragons for Tea Read Aloud
No Dragons for Tea is an excellent book to teach your children about fire safety! This adorable story really focuses on what’s most important for kids to know if there is ever a fire in your home. You can find this book at your local library, on amazon, or you can even find a read aloud version on YouTube.

Be sure to discuss important escape techniques with your child. Decide what is right to teach them based on their age. Here are some common fire safety tips for kids:
Smoke Crawl
If you encounter smoke, drop to the ground. Crawl on your hands and knees, staying below the smoke, towards the exit.
Stop, Drop, and Roll
If clothing catches on fire, stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with hands, and roll back and forth till fire is out.
Door Test
For older children, teach them the door test. If you need to leave a room that is closed, feel the door first. Place the back of your hand on the top and bottom of the door as well as the doorknob. Do not open a hot door, stuff the bottom of the door with towels or clothes.
Make a Family Escape Plan
There are many resources about specific instructions on an escape plan but here are the basics for kids to know:
- Don’t bring anything but yourself
- Don’t stop to play
- Don’t hide, go outside
- Know 2 ways out of every room in the house
- Know a meeting place for the family
Visit a Fire Station
Visiting the fire station is VERY exciting for children. Not only is fire station tour very exciting for your children, but it is also very educational as well. Check with your local fire station and make sure they are allowing visitors before you make the trip.
