Read Across America Activities for Preschoolers

Read Across America Week is approaching! Time for some fun Dr. Seuss Activities! Check out five Read Across America activities for preschoolers below.

The Cat in the Hat

Cat in the Hat Name Puzzle

You will need:

  • Red and White Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Marker

This is an easy activity to go along with The Cat in the Hat! Simply write letters of the child’s name on strips of paper. Write the letters in alternating colors red and white, so the child can make the pattern of the Cat in the Hat’s hat! Children put the letters of their name in order to form the hat. They will paste the strips onto a piece of paper to make their Cat in the Hat name hat! This is great practice for preschoolers working on identifying letters in their name and forming their name.

To modify this activity, you could simply do a Cat in the Hat Patterning Puzzle. Have your preschooler make the red and white AB repeating pattern to form the hat.

Ten Apples Up on Top

Ten Apples Up on Top of My Head

You will need:

  • Printed Picture of Child
  • Red Construction Paper
  • White Construction Paper
  • Marker
  • Glue

This is a simple activity to work on number recognition, counting, and number sequencing for the numbers 1-10. Take a picture of each child for the activity. Print out the pictures. Cut or print out apples with the numbers 1-10 on them. I actually used my Cricut machine for this, but you could easily cut some out!

Children will then paste the apples on top of their own picture in order from 1-10.

To modify this activity, leave the numbers off of the apples and just work on counting. Students will count how many apples there are and then paste the apples on top of their own picture.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

Fishing for Colors

You will need:

This is a fun activity for preschoolers that can have tons of variations! In this case, we will be using the activity for color recognition.

Children will use the magnetic fishing poles to fish for and catch certain colored fish! I simply cut out fish in different colors and put a paper clip on them to make them magnetic.

You could write letters, numbers, or even put shapes on the fish to use it for different learning activities.

The kids have a blast with this and I love these magnetic fishing poles we found from Amazon. You could easily make your own fishing poles with wooden dowels or wooden spoons, string, and a magnet!

Dr Seuss’s ABC’S

ABC Sensory Bin and Letter Match

You will need:

Preschoolers love sensory bins! We had an alphabet puzzle, so I decided to use the letters from our puzzle for our sensory bin. We put all of the letters into the rice and then my students found them and put them back onto the correct spot of the puzzle.

If you do not have an alphabet puzzle, you could print out my free letter tiles and then have an alphabet sheet of paper for students to match the letters to.

Don’t be alarmed if your preschoolers simply play around and explore the rice during this sensory activity. A lot of the time my students like to scoop, pour, and dig before they actually work on the task at hand. This is fine!

For a less messy version, you could simply do an alphabet puzzle or a letter matching activity where they match the letters to each other without using a sensory bin.

Foot Book

Opposites Puzzle

You will need:

The foot book is all about opposites. Try out my opposite puzzle with your preschoolers! Students will match the opposite pictures together to form the puzzle. You can certainly create your own version of this puzzle.
