Read Across America Spirit Week is one of my favorite weeks of the school year! Not only do we celebrate Dr. Seuss and all of his wonderfully amazing books, but we celebrate reading in general! Here are some of the fun themed spirit ideas for Read Across America Week!Oh the Places I’ll Go
Oh the Places You’ll Go is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books. For Read Across America week, I have my students dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up. If you teach younger kiddos, you may want to brainstorm ideas with them. For all dress up days, be sure to give notice to parents a few weeks in advance so they can adequately prepare!
Along with dressing up, we usually do a craftivity (activity that is also a craft) that goes along with the book. Click on the image below to learn more about the Oh The Places I’ll Go Craft-ivity.
Twin Day
We love The Cat in the Hat! In honor of this book and Thing 1 & Thing 2, we usually have Twin Day! The kids LOVE twin day and sometimes we even have some triplets.
After taking pictures of all of our sets of twins, we read The Cat in the Hat. Depending on the age of your students, you can modify this activity below!
How would you get the Cat in the Hat to leave your house?

Wacky Wednesday
On Wednesday during Read Across America Week, we read Wacky Wednesday. Students are invited to wear as many colors or wacky clothing combinations as possible. This day is always TONS of fun.
After reading Wacky Wednesday, we do the activity How to Make Wednesday Wacky. This FREEBIE is set up for students to write a “how to” using first, next, then, and last. If you have younger students, they can simply draw a picture of a “wacky day” etc. Click here to download the Wacky Wednesday Freebie.
Pajama Day
The day we read Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book is my favorite day because we always have PAJAMA DAY! I honestly think teachers love pajama day more than students do! Along with pajamas, I invite my students to bring in a blanket and or pillow and we lounge around and read for a designated amount of time. The kids think this is just amazing and so cool to have a pillow and blanket at school.
After reading The Sleep Book, we talk about dreams and dreaming. I have my students do a writing activity about what they like to dream about. If your students are not quite ready to write, they again can just draw a picture of what they like to dream about. Click here to download the Sleep Book Freebie.
Reading Rocks!
Read Across America Spirit Week is always tons of fun and is a great way to get kids excited about books and reading! Now would be a great time to establish a reading log with your students if you haven’t done so already. If you already have established a reading log, maybe add some new fun incentives for them when they reach certain milestones for the amount of pages read, or the amount of minutes read.
